Contractor: Roland Bardsley (Builders), Dukinfield, Cheshire
Contract value: £1,250,000

In essence a large single volume pub, this is a building which rises far beyond the dreary norm for this building type. The building makes the most of its site on a rejuvenated canal basin. Two storey glazing overlooking the water provides excellent views, along with admirable levels of daylight. The raised timber decking on the waterfront is neatly done and the disabled access is elegantly incorporated. The main space is robustly specified, heavy timber, polished concrete floor and stainless steel all seem to suit the buildings use without overwhelming the user. A mezzanine level serving pub grub benefits from views across the canal, while linking to the higher level road behind the building. Given that the building is largely below this level, the architects have done well to give it a clear presence on the road with a two storey landlordÕs flat and a prominent illuminated feature that creates a local landmark. The client, a small regional brewery, has obviously had great faith in their architects, even to the point of using them to specify the abstract art incorporated into the scheme.

'An exceptionally ambitious building for a brewery to commission. It is a welcome addition to the few modern pubs that break the mould of decades of old world pastiche. It is already a thriving venue and the building handles well the flow of customers.' Jury

'The building reflects the multi layered nature of the site and that the plan form grew by abstracting the dynamics of the busy Chester Road, the parallels of which reverberate through the site.' Architect
